To investigate the role of this polymorphism for breast cancer, we determined the prevalence of PTGS2 genotypes in 310 women with breast cancer and 310 gender- and age-matched healthy control subjects.
In this case-control study, three sequence variants rs689465, rs689466, rs20417 in the promoter region of COX-2 were screened to evaluate the association with breast cancer risk.
COX-2-rs20417 CC genotype was significantly associated with increased risk of breast cancer when comparing to G allele [ORs were 1.231 (1.050-1.444) for CC vs. GG, P = 0.01, 1.223 (1.045-1.432) for CC vs. G carrier, P = 0.01].
This meta-analysis showed that COX-2rs20417 polymorphism was correlated with an increased risk of breast cancer in Caucasians, while rs689466 was associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer in Caucasians.
