In a previously validated case-control study from Northern Ireland, consisting of 95 patients with insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes and nephropathy (cases) and 96 patients with insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes without nephropathy (controls), the authors performed PCR-based genotyping of specific DNA polymorphisms within the interleukin 1A, interleukin 1B, interleukin 1 (type 1) receptor and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist genes.
Further, CT, TT genotypes of IL-1beta (-511C/T) and 1/2 genotype of IL-1RN (VNTR) were found to be associated with risk of complications particularly with nephropathy in T2DM.
Our results showed that IL1RN (rs315952) was significantly associated with SLE in patients without renal disorder in the family-based study, after disease stratification, but was not significantly associated with SLE in the case-control study.
While a significant association be-tween macroalbuminuria and CRP could be observed (p<0,015), no associations were found between IL-6G(-174)C or IL1RA genotype and any stage of nephropathy.
