The present study demonstrates that the presence of null genotype of GSTM1/GSTT1 taken together with CYP1A1 (Val/Val) genotype increases the susceptibility to LC eightfold in comparison to CYP1A1 (Ile/Ile) and GSTM1/ GSTT1 genotype.
Particularly, genetic polymorphisms in NAD(P)H-quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1), cytochrome P450 (CYP)1A1, myeloperoxidase (MPO), glutathione-S-transferase (GST)P1, GSTT1, and GSTM1, and have been suspected to affect lung cancer risk.
The estimated risk of the GSTM1 null genotype for lung cancer was OR=1.34 (95%-CI: 0.99-1.81) and for the GSTT1 null genotype OR=0.88 (95%-CI: 0.59-1.32).
There was a marginally significant association between lung cancer and GSTT1 null genotype (OR=1.2; 95% CI:1.0-1.6), and a significant association between lung cancer and the homozygous CYP1A1 Msp1 variant allele (CYP1A1*2A and *2B) genotype (OR=4.7 95% CI:1.2-19.0).

In a combined analysis, the relative risks for lung cancer of the GSTM1 null and GSTT1 null polymorphisms were 1.18 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-1.23) and 1.09 (95% CI: 1.02-1.16), respectively, but in the larger studies they were only 1.04 (95% CI: 0.95-1.14) and 0.99 (95% CI: 0.86-1.11), respectively.
However, in the presence of a single copy of the variant CYP1A1 (CYP1A1*1/2A) and null GSTT1 genes, there was a three-fold increased risk for lung cancer; when stratified histologically the relative risk increased to 3.7 in case of SQCC.

The current meta-analysis suggested that the present/null polymorphism in the GSTT1 gene might contribute to the risk of lung cancer in Chinese population.
In this study, the involvement of three polymorphic genes (CYP2E1, GSTM1, and GSTT1) in the development of different histological types of lung cancer was investigated.
The meta-analysis suggests that GSTT1 deletion polymorphisms may have an effect on the susceptibility of lung cancer in Chinese population, and a study with the larger sample size is needed to further evaluate gene-gene and gene-environment interaction on GSTT1 deletion polymorphisms and lung cancer risk in Chinese population.
