Tissue microarray analysis revealed a low miR-27a level in adenocarcinoma cells, but not in squamous cell carcinoma cells, which was negatively associated with TGF-βRI expression.
Expression of miR-210 was shown to be significantly induced in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (9.26-fold, p<0.001) and adenocarcinoma cell lines (4.95-fold, p<0.001) and miR-27a-star was significantly up-regulated in adenocarcinoma cell lines (4.79-fold, p=0.04).
We performed a preliminary survey of independent adenoma and colorectal cancer (CRC) miRnoma data sets and, among the most dysregulated miRNAs, we selected miR-27a and disclosed that it is already upregulated in adenoma and further increases during the evolution to adenocarcinoma.
Significant overexpression of miR-21 (p=0.004), miR-27a (p=0.02), miR-34a (p<0.001), miR-196a (p=0.027) and miR-221 (p=0.031) was characteristic of HPV-positive squamous cell carcinomas in contrast to adenocarcinomas of the same HPV status.
