As availability of synovial fluid is limited, this study aimed to evaluate in the peripheral blood of patients with RA, the relationship if any, between the extent of oxidative stress in terms of generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in neutrophils, plasma NADPH oxidase and myeloperoxidase activity with markers of oxidative damage, circulating cytokines and disease activity score (DAS28).
Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) can trigger NADPH oxidase (NOX) and lead to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the pathophysiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
These data suggest that an increased copy number of NCF1 can be protective against developing RA and add support to previous findings of a role of NCF1 and the phagocyte NADPH oxidase complex in RA pathogenesis.
