Biallelic NF2 gene inactivation results in the development of central nervous system tumors, including schwannomas, meningiomas, ependymomas, and astrocytomas.
Because there have been only a few studies of the NF2 gene in glial tumors other than astrocytoma, we screened the entire 17 NF2 exons for mutations in a series of 47 nonastrocytic tumors, including 40 oligodendrogliomas and 7 ependymomas.
These results suggest that the NF2 gene may be important in the formation of some ependymomas but the NF2 gene is probably not the critical chromosome 22q tumor suppressor gene involved in astrocytoma tumorigenesis.
