Serum drawn on the first day of bacteremia was sent to a reference laboratory <i>post hoc</i> for measurement of interleukin-10 (IL-10) concentrations and correlation to in-hospital mortality.
On day 1 of presentation, IL-10 was elevated in patients with outcomes of mortality (P=0.008) and persistent bacteremia (P=0.034), while no difference occurred in IL-1β.
This study evaluates the impact of intravascular bacterial cell numbers (ie, the level of bacteremia), in patients at the time of clinical presentation on IL-10 production and its association with S. aureus bacteremia (SaB) mortality.

To test this hypothesis we have compared bacteremia and the cytokine response of normal and IL-10 deficient C57Bl/6 mice following ip infection with L. interrogans.
We report here that inhibition of thymocyte apoptosis by targeted adenovirus-induced thymic expression of human IL-10 reduced blood bacteremia and prevented mortality in sepsis.
