In this review we will assess the value of Hypoxia Induced Factor 1α (HIF-1α), Carbonic Anhydrase IX (CA-9) and Glucose Transporter 1 (GLUT-1) genes as predictive markers of the course of local advanced rectal cancer in patients who underwent pre-CRT.
We will systematically search PubMed, EMBASE, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases to identify studies assessing the interval to surgery after CRT in rectal cancer.
Patients who underwent surgery after completion of preop-CRT for non-metastatic rectal cancers from Jan 2004 to Dec 2013 were retrospectively enrolled.
This suggests that patients with locally advanced rectal cancer with a cCR to CRT have an excellent prognosis and may be candidates for organ preservation.

The aim of this retrospective study was to compare volumetric-modulated arc therapy using simultaneous integrated boosts (SIB-VMAT) of 45 Gy/55 Gy in 25 fractions with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) in preoperative chemoradiation for rectal cancers.
Given the lack of significant advantage and the higher cost of IMRT, caution should be exercised when using IMRT instead of traditional 3D-CRT for rectal cancer.
