To examine the relationship between subsets of colorectal polyps and non-mucinous and mucinous adenocarcinomas of the colorectum, we evaluated the frequency of the expression of cell lineage associated mucin core proteins (MUC5AC and MUC2), trefoil factors (TFF1 and TFF3), and APC and p21 in these tissues.
Immunohistochemically, all the 11 goblet cell-type MCs were strongly stained with CDX-2 and MUC2, 8 reacted with TTF-1, 6 with cytokeratin 20 (CK20), 9 with cytokeratin 7 (CK7), and 2 with MUC-5AC.
Pancreatic mucinous noncystic (colloid) carcinomas (MNCC) differ from the usual ductal adenocarcinomas in their mucin expression profile and share with many extrapancreatic mucinous carcinomas the expression of MUC2.
In conclusion, these results demonstrate that Le(y) and MUC1 immunoreactivity correlate with malignant transformation in the colorectum, whereas MUC2 represents a marker for low-grade dysplasia and the subtype of mucinous carcinomas.
IPMTs of adenoma (dysplasia) type exhibited high expression of MUC2 (93%), MUC5AC (97%), and, to a lesser extent, of MUC4 (71%), all of which were also observed in colloid carcinomas associated with IPMTs.
