This systematic review shows that available evidence regarding the dynamics of MMP-9 and TIMP levels may be a predictor of cerebrovascular events in both symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid stenosis in patients treated with stenting or endarterectomy.
High concentrations of MMP-9 found in patients with carotid stenosis and cerebral lesions suggest that MMP-9 assay could be useful in the evaluation of all carotid lesions to help identify those at highest risk of a neurologic event.
Elevated levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in patients with > or = 50% carotid stenosis were associated with a 2-fold risk of ipsilateral stroke or cardiovascular death.
