Most TNBCs expressing EGFR are non-specialized invasive ductal carcinomas, whereas others are likely to be rare specialized carcinomas, such as typical medullary carcinoma, apocrine carcinoma, metaplastic carcinoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma.
Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis for both EGFR and HER2 gene amplification was performed successfully in the archival tumor specimens of 20 patients with adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) and 17 patients with non-ACC, all treated with lapatinib.
EGFR was the most expressed TKRs (71%) and it was found across all histotypes. c-Kit expression was mainly restricted to adenoid cystic carcinoma (78%) while HER2 expression, mostly sustained by gene amplification, correlated with salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) in 44% of cases and adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified (AD, NOS) in 21% of cases.
This study was undertaken to define the role of c-erb B2 and c-erbB3 in adenoid cystic carcinomas (A.C.C.) of the salivary glands.Sixteen cases of A.C.C. were studied immunohistochemically, using antibodies against each erbB gene family product.
