The role of nuclear factor-2 erythroid related factor-2 (Nrf2) activator, berberine (BBR), has been established in rat model of streptozotocin induced diabetic neuropathy.
In addition, deguelin decreased glucose levels, attenuated oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, and elevated levels of H2S, nuclear respiratory factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1, suggesting a disease-attenuating effect of deguelin in DN rats.
Despite involvement of Nrf2 in progression of diabetic neuropathy, targeting Nrf2 activators as a therapeutic potential will provide important new insights into the ways that influence treatment of diabetic neuropathy.
This review presents an emerging concept of Nrf2 in diabetic neuropathy; thus looking forward to newer strategies for combating the oxidant induced damage.
