Mdx showed focal lesions with intense inflammation and fibrosis related to immunoexpression of MMP-2 and MMP-9, proving the hypothesis that these MMPs are linked to muscular tissue degeneration, which can be regenerated by their inhibition, improving the treatment of DMD carriers.
Herein we examined the potential applicability of serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase 9 and matrix metalloproteinase 2, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1, myostatin (GDF-8) and follistatin (FSTN) as non-invasive biomarkers to distinguish between DMD steroid naïve patients and healthy controls of similar age and also for carrier detection.
A recent study showed that deletion of the MMP9 gene in mdx, a mouse model for DMD, improved skeletal muscle pathology and function; however, the role of MMP-2 in the dystrophin-deficient muscle is not well known.
