Our results suggest that low levels of CR1 on erythrocytes in SLE patients are required during the course of the disease and that the 6.9 kb restriction fragment does not play a role in causing susceptibility to the disease.
SLE was induced using two immunologic approaches: (1) immunization with the human monoclonal anti-DNA antibody expressing the 16/6Id, to which the DBA/2 strain is susceptible (responder) and the C57BL/6 strain is resistant (nonresponder); and (2) induction of autoimmune GVHD in B6D2F1 hosts by inoculation of parental DBA/2 (induces SLE) or C57BL/6 (does not induce SLE) T cells.
Stratification of patients suggested that DRB*1501 and TNF a11 frequencies were higher in SLE patients with renal disease and TNF a2 and b 3 frequencies in those without, although these differences did not reach statistical significance.
There was no difference in the proportion of total CD95(+) B cells (23.5+/-2.8) in the two groups, but SLE patients in an inactive phase of the disease characteristically expressed a relatively high proportion (50%) of CD95(high) B cells.

Male SLE patients showed a higher frequency of renal involvement, serositis, thrombocytopenia, malar rash and discoid rash than female SLE, and male SLE had a higher frequency of FcgammaRIIa-R/R131 or R131-allele than male controls, but FcgammaRIIa or FcgammaRIIIa genotypes had no association with renal involvement in male SLE patients.
SLE and normal T cells pretreated with estradiol and cultured with ionomycin for 2 h to activate calcineurin showed no significant differences in CD40L mRNA.
