Compared to patients with IgAN-NSD, those with IgAN-SD had significantly lower mean serum protein (6.4 g/dL vs. 6.7 g/dL; p = 0.02), albumin (3.7 g/dL vs. 3.9 g/dL; p = 0.02), and complement (C3) (94 mg/dL vs. 103 mg/dL; p = 0.02) levels.
IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is a complex syndrome characterized by deposition of IgA and IgA containing immune complexes (ICs) composed of IgG and complement C3 proteins in the mesangial area of glomeruli.
We have used the amplification refractory mutation system, a modification of the polymerase chain reaction, to analyze these two C3 polymorphisms on genomic DNA from 133 Hong Kong Chinese individuals: 54 patients with IgAN and 79 controls.
