In conclusion, this study showed that ABO mismatch did not seem to have a significant effect on major outcomes after alloHSCT, such as developing GVHD, relapse rate, mortality rate, DFS and OS.
The impact of ABO mismatch has been studied on various hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) outcomes, including neutrophil and platelet engraftment, pure red cell aplasia, acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), nonrelapse mortality (NRM), and overall survival (OS).
The possibility that allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation performed across the ABO blood group-barrier is associated with an increase of graft-versus-host disease, in particular endothelial damage, has not been elucidated so far.
Therefore, the genotype behind the ABO blood group phenotype should be considered to answer the question of whether ABO mismatch is a risk factor of GVHD.
