The participants were assessed before, during and after the therapy with Hemangioma Activity Score (HAS), Doppler ultrasound (US) of the lesions, as well as VEGF and bFGF serum concentrations.
In conclusion, our data suggest that overexpression of the Hedgehog components SHH, GLI2 and FOXA2 might be used as markers of an aggressive hemangioma that would benefit from too early intervention, while FGF2 and GLUT1 are more general markers of hemangiomas.
Epidermis from normal individuals and epidermis directly overlying involuted tumors or at sites distant to the proliferating hemangioma was not hyperplastic and expressed normal levels of bFGF, VEGF/VPF, and IFN-beta.
A large number of cells within the specimens of proliferative hemangiomas revealed localized gene expression of basic fibroblast growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor messenger RNA (626 +/- 129 and 1660 +/- 371 cells/mm2, respectively).
