The DQA1*0501, DQB1*0301, and DRB1*0401 alleles, and the DQA1*0301-DQB1*0301, DQA1*0501-DQB1*0301, and DRB1*1101-DQB1*0301 haplotypes seem to be associated with low hepatitis activity; whereas DQB1*0201 allele is closely correlated with the progression of liver injury in chronic HCV infection.
The identification of DRB1*01 and DQB1*03 involved with self-limiting hepatitis in different ethnic groups is a very important finding that will contribute to the current knowledge about HCV-host interaction and the development of therapeutic vaccines.
Patients with DRB1*1501-DRB5*0101-DQB1*0602 haplotype were more likely than patients without it to have a cholestatic (70% vs. 60%) or mixed (30% vs. 13%) than a hepatocellular pattern of hepatitis (0% vs. 27%) (P < 0.05).
Our findings show that extended haplotypes including class I B54 are closely associated with the progression of liver injury, whereas extended haplotypes including class II DRB1*1302-DQB1*0604 are associated with low hepatitis activity in chronic HCV infection.
