Consistent with the commonality between cardiovascular and AD risk factors in humans, we saw that a high cholesterol diet leads to up-regulation of BACE1 (β-secretase) transcription and down-regulation of ADAM10 (α-secretase) transcription which should increase release of Aβ from APP.
The aim of the present study was to functionally characterize platelets by FACS, to examine alterations in APP expression and secretion, and to measure serotonin levels in hypercholesterolemia mice with AD-like pathology and in two AD mouse models, the triple transgenic AD model (3xTg) and the APP overexpressing AD model with the Swedish-Dutch-Iowa mutations (APP_SweDI).
