We show for the first time that Hmox1 is constitutively expressed at barrier tissues at the interface between the internal and external environments, and that it is highly induced in muscle cells during systemic inflammation.
Higher levels of Hsp32, Hsp70 and Hsp90 were noticed in patients with inflammation, a commonly occurring natural stimulant of Hsp production, compared to control subjects.
These results demonstrate that HO-1 activity operates through distinct molecular mechanisms to confer cytoprotection in the hypoxic and the LPS models of inflammation.
