Immunoglobulin (Ig)A proteases of Haemophilus influenzae are highly specific endopeptidases that cleave the hinge region of human IgA1 and also mediate invasion and trafficking in human respiratory epithelial cells, facilitating persistence of H. influenzae.
We conclude that a clonally related group of strains of nontypeable H. influenzae that has two IgA1 protease genes (iga and igaB) is adapted for colonization and infection in COPD.
They identify nontypeable H influenzaeIgA1 protease as a virulence factor and as a potential target for the development of new strategies to fight these important pathogens.
The deduced amino acid sequence of EspP showed homology to several secreted or surface-exposed proteins of pathogenic bacteria, in particular EspC of enteropathogenic E. coli and IgA1 proteases from Neisseria spp. and Haemophilus influenzae.
