Within this context, we now show increased expression of the C-X-C chemokines (CXCL1 and CXCL2) and their receptor CXCR2, and the intercellular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), in the lung tissues of patients with COPD.
Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI), a common colonizer of lungs of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), can enhance expression of the cellular receptor intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), which in turn can be used by major group human rhinoviruses (HRVs) for attachment.
We investigated the expression of adhesion molecules in circulating neutrophils (lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 [LFA-1], Mac-1, and L-selectin) and endothelial cells (soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1[sICAM-1]) in 23 patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 18 subjects with exacerbated COPD, and 23 healthy volunteers.
