Results were available for 29 affected patients (15 females and 14 males), median age 26 (range 9-63) years, comprising three mutation groups: succinate dehydrogenase subunit B or D ([SDHB/D] 16 patients), multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 ([MEN 2] 6 patients) and von Hippel-Lindau disease ([VHL] 7 patients).
Heritable non-SDHx HNP might occur in von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL, VHL gene), multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2, RET gene), and neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1, NF1 gene).
Absence of phenotypic characteristics of VHL or NF1 and elevated calcitonin levels both basal and post pentagastrin stimulation, raised the possibility of MEN 2A syndrome.
