Peritoneal Lavage CEA mRNA Levels Predict Conversion Gastrectomy Outcomes after Induction Chemotherapy with Intraperitoneal Paclitaxel in Gastric Cancer Patients with Peritoneal Metastasis.
These include germline DNA single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the BRCA1 and -2 genes to determine high risk in unaffected women, selected tissue-based markers to determine prognosis and predict benefit from therapy, and circulating MUC1, CEA and perhaps tumor cells to monitor patients with metastatic disease.
(1) Statistically significant high levels of CK20,VEGF, CEA (p = 0.000 each) and CA19-9 (p = 0.002) in CRC patients when compared with controls; (2) Statistically significant increase in the expression of CK20 in advancing CRC stage C (p = 0.001) and with LN metastasis (p = 0.000); (3) Statistically significant increase in the expression of VEGF in advancing CRC stage C (p = 0.002), pathologic grade (p = 0.038), and with LN metastasis (p = 0.004); and (4) statistically positive correlation between CK20 and VEGF expressions, and also between these markers and CEA level.
The follow-up with a period of 1.2 years showed that the patients with the B+3/B0 ratios of >or= 0.3 for CEA cells or/and >or= 10 for survivin cells exhibited significantly high possibility of developed metastasis, and the sensitivity to predict developed metastasis increased from 54.5% of CEA mRNA alone to 72.7% of CEA and survivin mRNA panel.
High platelet count (H-PC) was found in 32%, and it was associated with a higher rate of palliative surgery (p < 0.001), extra-hepatic metastases (p < 0.001), bilobar liver disease (p = 0.007), presence of more than three metastases (p = 0.005), biggest metastasis larger than 5 cm (p < 0.001), and CEA level higher than 200 ng/mL (p = 0.035).
