The followings, for instance, are only a few of the many new biomarkers that have been recently identified: the phosphorylated tau protein and aggregated Beta-amyloid peptide for Alzheimer's disease (AD), Alpha-synuclein contained Lewy bodies and altered dopamine transporter (DAT) imaging for Parkinson's disease (PD), SOD mutations for familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and CAG repeats resulted from Huntington's gene mutations in Huntington's disease (HD).
The loss of Cu,Zn-SOD m-RNA in SNc in MPTP-treated marmosets and patients with PD suggests that it is primarily located in dopaminergic neuronal cell bodies.
We investigated the substantia nigra (SN) in MND cases; two cases of motor neurone disease inclusion body (MND-IB) dementia, six cases of DMND, 14 cases of MND (including one case from Guam and two cases of familial SOD1 mutation), four cases of Parkinson's disease (PD), and 10 cases of age-matched normal controls.
Spinal cord from 11 ALS cases and 27 controls consisting of 15 cases of Alzheimer disease (AD), six cases of Parkinson disease (PD), three cases of cerebrovascular disease, and three control cases were analyzed.

To evaluate the possibility of a shared genetic defect in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease, the SOD1 gene was sequenced in index patients with familial Parkinson's disease from 23 families. No changes were detected.
The finding of SOD variants in FALS is consistent with the hypothesis that free radicals contribute to the pathogenesis of FALS, and possibly to the pathogenesis of other neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, in which there is substantial evidence of oxidant stress.
