The expression of TLR2 and CD14 was greatest in the periodontitis group that was classified as severe grade, followed by moderate and mild grades, which suggests a role of TLR2 and CD14 in the pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis.
Homozygocity for the C allele of the CD14 (C260T) polymorphism (CC) was associated with a two--fold increased susceptibility to periodontitis (p = 0.04; odds ratio, 2.49; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-6.26).
Logistic regression analysis adjusted for gender, age, smoking, and prevalence of P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans showed an association between the CD14-260T/T genotype and periodontitis (P = 0.004, OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.4-6.9).
In contrast, the distribution of the CD14 -159C-to-T polymorphism showed no significant difference among males with and without periodontitis (p=0.816).
These findings suggest that CD14-159C/T polymorphism is not related to the development of periodontitis in a Japanese population, but that, within the periodontitis subjects, expression of the SNP may be related to early disease activity.
