In the present study we have examined the relationship of the Pro(12)Ala polymorphism in the PPARgamma gene (PPARG) to clinical and hormonal features of PCOS.
Our data support a role for PPARgamma gene polymorphism in the pathogenesis of PCOS, the presence of the Ala isoform being protective against the development of PCOS.
In conclusion, the higher frequency of the C-->T substitution in exon 6 of the PPAR-gamma gene in PCOS women suggests that it plays a role in the complex pathogenetic mechanism of obesity in PCOS, whereas the Pro(12)Ala polymorphism does not seem to affect BMI in PCOS women.
