Using functional magnetic resonance imaging we examined whether there was an interaction between the effects of genes that influence dopamine and glutamate transmission (DAT and G72) on regional brain activation during verbal fluency, which is known to be abnormal in psychosis, in 80 healthy volunteers.
Significant associations were observed between the serotonin transporter gene (SERT) polymorphism STin2 and "psychosis"; the dopamine transporter gene (DAT) 3' variable number tandem repeats (VNTR) and "agitation"; and the dopamine receptor 4 (DRD4) VNTR and "moods" factors.
In this first phase of the project, the objective was to investigate the distribution of four candidate genetic polymorphisms for functional psychosis (Ser9Gly DRD3, 5HTTLPR, the VNTR 3'-UTR SLC6A3 and Val66Met BDNF) in a case-control sample.
