To date, researchers have discovered that Nrf2 deletion results in high susceptibility and severity of insults in various models of respiratory diseases, including bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), respiratory infections, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and lung cancer.
Besides, Trx-1, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and Txnip expression were measured to explore how seawater induced oxidative stress and the mechanism by which AC-Res attenuated seawater inhalation-induced ARDS.
Our findings support the involvement of NFE2L2 gene variants in ARDS susceptibility and reinforce further exploration of the role of oxidant stress response as a risk factor for ARDS in critically ill patients.
