Organophosphorus nerve agents (OPNAs) irreversibly block acetylcholinesterase activity, resulting in accumulation of excess acetylcholine at neural synapses, which can lead to a state of prolonged seizures known as status epilepticus (SE).
Persistent inhibition of acetylcholinesterase resulting from exposure to nerve agents such as soman, is associated with prolonged seizure activity known as status epilepticus (SE).
Similar to organophosphate (OP) nerve agents, diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) rapidly and irreversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase, leading to convulsions that can progress to status epilepticus (SE).
