Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire that included questions on sociodemographic characteristics, the nature of the suicide attempt, the question of alcohol consumption prior to the suicide attempt and a CAGE questionnaire screening for problem drinking (CAGE ≥ 2).
The CAGE (Cutting down, Annoyed by criticism, Guilty feeling, and Eye-opener) questionnaire was used to screen the participants for alcohol dependence, and a score ≥ 2 indicated problem drinking.
<b>Results:</b> The discrimination accuracy of the AUDIT for PD was significantly better than that of the CAGE or the CAGE+GGT (z=6.927, <i>p</i><0.0001; z=5.301, <i>p</i><0.0001, respectively).
Predictive accuracy, as measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for alcohol abuse/dependence, was HDI: 0.89; CAGE: 0.84.
Participants reported whether they currently had MCCs, problem drinking (defined as affirming two or more of the four CAGE screening questions), symptoms associated with depression, and other social and health measures.
