In fact, recent evidence suggests that cardiotrophin-1 may serve as both a biomarker of left ventricular hypertrophy and dysfunction in hypertensive patients, and a potential target for therapies aimed to prevent and treat hypertensive heart disease beyond blood pressure control.
Transvenous endomyocardial biopsies were obtained in 52 hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy: 28 without heart failure and 24 with heart failure. gp130 and gp130-dependent antiapoptotic pathways p42/44 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) as well as gp130 agonist cardiotrophin-1 were analyzed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and western blot.
This study also demonstrates that ventricular CT-1 mRNA correlates with left ventricular hypertrophy, suggesting that CT-1 plays an important role in the structural remodeling that characterizes CHF.
