In a retrospective analysis of 195 patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC), we examined the prognostic value of a coexpression of fragile histidine triad (FHIT) protein and c-kit on patient's survival.
To determine whether some individuals have increased fragility of FRA3B that might increase the risk for breakage or deletion in 3p14.2, fragile site expression was examined in smokers, nonsmokers, and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients.
3p14.2 allele loss was very frequent in 32 lung cancer cell lines [100% of small cell lung cancer and 88% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)] and 108 primary NSCLC cancers (45%), with numerous breakpoints indicating involvement of several distinct regions in the FRA3B site.
The common fragile site at 3p14(FRA3B) is cytogenetically close to the positions of translocation and deletion breakpoints frequently observed in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and small cell carcinoma of the lung.
