TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is cytotoxic to most thyroid cancer cell lines, including those originating from anaplastic carcinomas, implying TRAIL as a promising therapeutic agent against thyroid cancers.
SRF was expressed in 50 of 63 cases of papillary carcinoma (79%), 18 of 30 cases of follicular adenoma (60%), 10 of 30 cases of nodular hyperplasia (33%) and 6 of 9 cases of anaplastic carcinoma (67%).
TSH-R mRNA levels were decreased to 30% and 7% of normal levels in Hashimoto's thyroids (p = 0.0281, n = 5) and anaplastic carcinomas (p = 0.0033, n = 6), respectively.
According to histologic classification, 47 (97.9%) of 48 papillary carcinomas, 7 (87.5%) of 8 follicular carcinomas, 3 (60.0%) of 5 medullary carcinomas, and 4 (50.0%) of 8 anaplastic carcinomas showed positive staining of ets-1.
After multiple passages, UMC-SCLC-1 gradually changed its culture characteristics to a cell line, UMC-SCLC-1A, with morphological features of large cell anaplastic carcinoma, an altered growth pattern, decrease in calcitonin, and increase in radioresistance but retained the other biochemical markers of classic SCLC (bombesin and dopa decarboxylase production).
