In lung cancers, mASH1 stained 1.1% (1 of 93) of adenocarcinomas, 0.9% (1 of 111) of squamous cell carcinomas, 0% (0 of 30) of large cell carcinomas, 66.7% (6 of 9) of large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas, and 82.5% (94 of 114) of small cell carcinomas.
Twenty lung cancer cell lines out of 33 were positive for hASH1 mRNA by reverse transcription PCR, including 6/6 small cell carcinomas (SCLC), 5/5 carcinoids, 6/7 non-SCLC with NE features, and 3/14 other non-SCLC.
Of 59 small cell carcinomas, 49 (83%) expressed MASH1 in nuclear staining whereas out of 59 small cell carcinomas, 43 (73%) expressed TTF-1 in nuclear staining.
By real-time RT-PCR, the amounts of hASH1 mRNA in a small cell NEC were 16,600 times higher than those in adenocarcinomas and 110 times higher than those in a carcinoid tumor.
