Mutations in the gyrA and parC genes and in vitro activities of fluoroquinolones in 114 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa derived from urinary tract infections and their rapid detection by denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography.
To detect if isolates susceptible to quinolones already carry mutations in the gyrA and parC genes, we selected 12 ciprofloxacin-susceptible Escherichia coli strains collected from patients with urinary tract infections in Latin America in 1998, as part of ongoing SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program.
We determined partial sequences of the gyrA and parC genes of Citrobacter freundii type strain, and then examined 38 C. freundii clinical strains isolated from patients with urinary tract infections for the association of alterations in GyrA and ParC with susceptibility to fluoroquinolones.
