Here, we examined the effects of nerve growth factor (NGF) and its cognate receptor (Trk or TrkA) on the survival of a common childhood brain tumor, i.e., medulloblastoma, a tumor that resembles CNS neuroepithelial progenitor cells.
In this study, we also examined the effects of retinoic acid, 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate, and NGF on medulloblastoma cell lines to evaluate their effect on morphological differentiation and NGFr expression.
To generate a human central nervous system neuronal cell line that would respond to NGF, we infected the medulloblastoma cell line D283 MED with a defective retrovirus carrying the cDNA coding for the human NGFR.
