<b>Aim:</b> To identify the role of mannose binding lectin (MBL) in susceptibility to HPV infection and to explore the relationship between MBL and response to intralesional Candida antigen immunotherapy of wart.
Additionally, no significant association was found between the MBL2 -550 H/L or -221 X/Y polymorphisms and HPV infection in Caucasians, but there may be potential links in Asians.
In the present study the possible association between MBL2 functional polymorphisms and susceptibility to develop atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance was investigated in a group of women from North-East of Italy, stratified for HPV infection status.
Therefore we propose that MBL2 polymorphisms responsible for defective production of mannose binding lectin (MBL) protein play a role in the increased susceptibility to high-risk HPV infection but not to cervical cancer onset and development.
