In this 10-year prospective study, NGT with higher serum RBP4 and PAI-1, and with lower adiponectin were associated with new-onset prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
The combination of MASP, apolipoprotein E (apoE) and adiponectin improved diabetes prediction on top of both reference models, while prediabetes prediction was improved by MASP plus CRP on top of the HbA1c model.
In multivariate analysis, we found that serum adiponectin lowers the risk of prediabetes (<i>p</i> = 0.002; odds ratio (OR), 0.764; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.646⁻0.905).
After complete adjustments, adiponectin but not prediabetes maintained independently associated with delayed recall memory (β 0.067; 95% CI 0.006-0.234; p = 0.040).
Moreover, multiple linear regression analysis, with 25(OH)D, insulin and homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) as the variables, revealed that serum adiponectin levels might be an independent risk factor for the progression of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in subjects.
