Data on survival and disease-free survival were obtained from hospital records of 23 patients with an established diagnosis of parathyroid carcinoma in whom CASR and parafibromin expression and HRPT2/CDC73 mutation analyses were available from paraffin-embedded pathological specimens.
In contrast, colon and parathyroid cancers often present with reduced or absent CaR expression, and activation of this receptor decreases cell proliferation, suggesting a role for the CaR as a tumor suppressor gene.
Furthermore, immunohistochemical expression profiles for the calcium sensing receptor (CASR), cyclin D1 (CCND1), and Ki-67 were determined for parathyroid carcinomas and compared with adenomas and hyperplasias using a tissue microarray.
