Full-field ERG recordings in Batten disease patients, both homozygous and heterozygous for the 1.02 kb deletion in the CLN( 3) gene, confirm retinal degeneration to be severe, widespread, and with a rapid progression early in the disease course.
The decreased ERG responses are discussed with reference to the known retinal abnormalities in both generalized oculocutaneous albinism and Batten's disease, another ceroid-lipofuscin storage disorder.
Three unrelated children aged from 5.6 to 8.8 years, and with molecularly confirmed CLN3, underwent a comprehensive ophthalmological examination including visual acuity, fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), electrophysiology (multifocal ERG), Goldmann visual fields, and SD-OCT.
