The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate heparin-binding protein (HBP), lysozyme, and the cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) as potential biomarkers for pulmonary infection in lung-transplanted patients.
After M. pneumoniae lung infection, Muc18(-/-) mice exhibited lower levels of the lung proinflammatory cytokines KC and TNF-α and less neutrophil recruitment than Muc18(+/+) mice.
In both the Sereny test and a murine lung infection model, the Shigella ΔipaH4.5 mutant strain caused more severe inflammatory responses and significantly induced higher pro-inflammatory cytokine levels (MIP-2 and TNF-α) in the lung homogenates of wild type-infected mice.
Conversely, PVL lowered the levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) produced in active pulmonary infection, while low doses induced apoptosis, suggesting that PVL also has the capacity to regulate inflammation.
