Stimulation of liver regeneration through interleukin-22, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor or farnesoid X receptor agonists, inhibition of apoptosis, early liver transplantation and modulation of gut microbiota through antibiotic or faecal transplantation approaches constitute new therapeutic perspectives that are investigated in current clinical trials.
The results of the current study indicated that IL-22 mediated JAK-STAT pathway i.e. liver regeneration and healing is dependent on the disease progression and type of agent responsible for causing the infection in the first place.
Acute-on-chronic liver injury or bacterial infection is associated with impaired liver regeneration due to a shift from the pro-regenerative to anti-regenerative pathways, IL-22Fc therapy reverses this shift and attenuates bacterial infection, thus IL-22Fc may have therapeutic potential for ACLF treatment.
