Common polymorphisms of the vitamin D receptor gene have been reported to affect the risk of breast, colon, prostate, and differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), but polymorphisms within the genes of vitamin D metabolizing enzymes have not been studied in DTC.
Therefore, identifiable markers of sensitivity or resistance to VDR agonist therapy may allow for a personalized use of these agents in poorly differentiated thyroid cancer.
