Here, we report that treatment of olmesartan effectively targets the feedback loop between the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) signals in tubular epithelial cells and preserves renal angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression in the kidney of <i>Col4a3</i>-/- mice, a murine model of experimental AS.
Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 did not improve glomerular injury in 2 models of mild diabetic nephropathy but was partially protective in an Alport syndrome model.
Thus, treatment with exogenous ACE2 alters angiotensin peptide metabolism in the kidneys of Col4a3 knockout mice and attenuates the progression of Alport syndrome nephropathy.
