(1) The use of LMWH for VTE prophylaxis (per cent ICU days) and albumin for fluid resuscitation (per cent of patients); and (2) provider knowledge of evidence underpinning these practices, and barriers and facilitators to adopt and de-adopt these practices.
Caprini score (odds ratio [OR] 1.53, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.10-2.15, p = 0.01), preoperative serum albumin level (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.16-1.00, p = 0.05), and 60-day non-VTE serious morbidity (OR 3.45, 95% CI 1.25-9.51, p = 0.02) were risk factors associated with 60-day VTEs on multivariate analysis.
Multivariable analysis identified pre-operative albumin (p < 0.001), bleeding disorders (p < 0.001), operative time (p < 0.001), and having a PNET (p = 0.04) as risk factors for VTE in abdominal NET patients.
Epidemiological evidence is that low serum albumin levels are linked to incident ischemic heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke and venous thromboembolism, independent of risk factors, body mass index and inflammation.
Therefore, low albumin levels, often present in cancer or critically ill patients, might contribute to the frequently occurring venous thromboembolism.
