Anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have become the mainstay in the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and have shown significant activity in patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
The resultant fusion protein, designated scFvRit:sFasL, potently induced CD20-restricted apoptosis in a panel of malignant B-cell lines (10 of 11) and primary patient-derived malignant B cells (two of two non-Hodgkin lymphoma and five of six B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia).
The 17 patients with the CD20 dim profile represent a homogeneous subgroup very close to typical B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) on morphological, phenotypical and cytogenetical criteria.
The cells from all cases were CD5+ CD20+, expressed clonally restricted surface immunoglobulin light chain, and had typical features for B-CLL on careful blood smear morphologic evaluation.
