We analysed 104 consecutive cases (55 AML, 23 B-cell lineage ALL, three T-cell ALL, 11 blast crisis of chronic myeloproliferative disorders and 12 cases of myelodysplastic syndromes with more than 10% of blasts) referred to our Hospital for immunophenotypic diagnosis and compared the expression pattern of CD13, CD33 and CD117 using the same fluorochrome (phycoerythrin-PE).
Our results suggest that the leukemia with inv(3)(q21q26) represents a new cytogenetic-clinicopathologic subtype, characterized by 1) abnormal megakaryopoiesis and multiple hematopoietic lineage involvement; 2) an antecedent MDS; 3) poor response to conventional chemotherapy; and 4) expression of CD7, CD34, CD38, HLA-DR, CD13, and CD33 antigens.
Bone marrow and peripheral blood from a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patient with trisomy 8 and associated systemic vasculitis was investigated for clonal lymphoid lineage involvement using simultaneous metaphase and interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunocytochemistry with antibodies against CD13 (granulocytic), glycophorin A (GPA, erythroid), and the lymphocytic antigens CD3.CD5, CD20, and CD22.
