Joubert syndrome (JS) is a genetically heterogeneous autosomal recessive ciliopathy with 22 genes implicated to date, including a small, ciliary GTPase, ARL13B.
Using mutant versions of Arl13b, one of which has been shown to be causative of the ciliopathy Joubert syndrome, we establish that the GTPase activity of the protein is essential for ciliary membrane extension.
