Friend leukemia integration-1 (Fli-1), a member of the Ets gene family of transcription factors, has been demonstrated to be a target of a leukaemia inducing virus in mice, and is known to be part of a fusion gene in Ewings' sarcoma in humans.
Fli-1 was initially isolated following retrovirus insertional mutagenesis screens for leukemic initiator genes, and accordingly, inhibition of this transcription factor can suppress leukemia through induction of erythroid differentiation.
Primary gastric epithelioid angiosarcomas: the definitive diagnosis was provided by immunohistochemical analysis with endothelial markers such as cluster of differentiation 31 (CD31), ether-a-go-go-related gene (ERG), and Freund leukemia integration (FLI-1).
Fli-1 regulates normal hematopoiesis and vasculogenesis, and its aberrant expression underlies virus-induced leukemias and various types of human cancers.
